My mom was the one who got things done, did the paperwork, took care of the bills and all the daily practicalities of life. There I was filled with my own grief over her loss, but I expected to attend to the legal requirements, arrange the funeral, arrange assistance for my father, and try to make sure that all mandatory things were done.

It was two days before Christmas when Mom died, and that made it a lot harder emotionally and very difficult practically, as much of the government and business community was on Christmas vacation.

I mentally distanced myself from everything: I closed my grief internally and concentrated on dealing with the practical things – just surviving every day. The problem was that every time I let go of my guard, the pain, loss, and confusion came back with a vengeance. I even started avoiding the places my mom and I loved to go to together

Death, loss and grief are some of the least understood and discussed parts of our existence!

In the distance, I realized this was not a good path and I looked for something to find to deal with and help my father cope with it. I realized that I needed information about what was happening to me. I wanted to understand why I was acting the way I was. I wanted to be sure I wasn’t going crazy.

I easily found some very basic information from government organizations about their requirements, but that was mostly dry legal stuff about what forms to submit to whom and by when.

The online forums and bulletin boards in support of grief and sorrow were full of people who were just as broken and in need of help as I was, and many who might have the best of intentions but insisted on their way of dealing with life that’s just so, and that everyone else has no idea.

I spent a lot of money on grief therapy sessions and spent a lot of time with the local priest – both the therapist and priest were well-meaning and helpful people, but I quickly realized that they were just bringing the same information over and over again (and it was their point of view of things, with no flexibility to deal with the way I saw the world, expecting me to just accept them and “overcome” my grief.

There was no information on why my father and I reacted and acted the way we were, nor what to do, how to understand and move forward. What little I found was either an opinion that was very local or just presented from one perspective. Different needs, beliefs, backgrounds or cultures were not taken into account.

There just had to be a better way!

I was determined to understand what my father and I were going through, so I started my own research. I read many books I could find on grief (and there really weren’t many) and spoke to other people who were also dealing with grief. As I did this, I realized that at some point in our lives we all face the loss of someone or something that is very close to our hearts. I also realized that in almost all cases there is absolutely nothing we can do to prevent this loss or to change the circumstances in which it occurs. So inevitably we all have to grapple with the fact that the world around us will go on as if nothing has changed, no matter how devastated we feel by the loss.

I spent literally years of my time and thousands of dollars researching grief and learning all I could to help myself heal. There was no place where I could find detailed information on the subject in easy-to-understand terms to help me. I had to read hundreds of articles and books and search for each piece of information.
